Children's sudoku is graded by grid size before it is graded by difficulty. A 4×4 grid uses only the numbers 1 to 4 and is closer to a matching task than a logic problem, which is what makes it workable for a five-year-old. A 6×6 grid introduces rectangular boxes. A 9×9 grid is the puzzle adults solve.
All four books below contain more than one grid size. What actually differs is the balance: the youngest edition opens on 4×4 and spends most of its pages there, while the oldest is more than half full-size 9×9 (4×4 vs 6×6 sudoku explains when to move a child up). Treat the ages on the covers as a starting point, not a rule — children arrive at this at their own pace.

Print size is a layout decision
Twelve puzzles to a page and two puzzles to a page are the same trim size with very different grids. That ratio, not the words on the cover, is what makes the large print edition readable.
Where you solve matters
The 8.5 × 11 books are table books. The travel edition is 5 × 8 and holds 150 puzzles rather than a thousand — the one you take with you, not the one you work through at home.
For a child, start below their age
A first puzzle a child can actually finish is what buys the patience for the harder ones. If you are between two editions, the younger one is the safer buy: its later sections still contain full 9×9 grids.
