Detective Mystery Word Search is a paperback of 50 detective mysteries in which the word search is the investigation, available now on Amazon. Each case gives you a story, suspects and documents, and a grid of letters. Finding the words is only the first step: what the finished grid shows, such as which words are there, which cross and which way they run, is the evidence that names the culprit.

Five ways to investigate

Every case uses one of five methods. The book opens with one case of each, then mixes them.

1

Forensic Evidence

A lab list names possible traces, and the case says how many are hidden. The ones you find were at the scene; match them to what each suspect works with.

2

Alibi Timeline

Surnames and photo captions share the grid. Where a surname crosses a caption, that person is in the photo, so you learn where they were and when.

3

Access and Opportunity

The grid is a floor plan with walls. Where a word lies tells you where a person or an object was, and the keys decide who could reach the scene.

4

Contradictory Testimony

Circle every word. The letters left over spell one fact, and it shows whose statement cannot be true.

5

Route Reconstruction

Each place name runs in the direction someone traveled next. Follow the directions on the map to rebuild the route and find the stop that matters.

Three levels, from warm-up to challenge

The 50 cases come in three parts, so you can learn each method on a short case before the longer ones.

PartCasesSuspectsGrid size
Beginner153 to 49 to 13 letters square
Intermediate204 to 511 to 14 letters square
Advanced154 to 611 to 14 letters square

Beginner cases use all five methods. Intermediate cases use all five as well, and advanced cases use three of them: forensic evidence, access and opportunity, and route reconstruction. Levels are our own estimate from the structure of each case; how hard a case feels depends on the solver.

How a word search solves a mystery

Here is the whole idea on a very small scale. The suspects and the lab list are printed in the case; only the grid can tell you which materials were really on the evidence.

A three-suspect warm-up

Someone left a smudge on the stolen notebook. The lab tested it for five materials: INK, OIL, SOAP, TAR and WAX. Exactly three of them are hidden in the grid, in any direction. Whoever took the notebook works with all three.

  • Nora (the printer) works with INK, SOAP, WAX.
  • Ravi (the mechanic) works with INK, OIL, WAX.
  • Lena (the roofer) works with SOAP, TAR, WAX.

Lab list: INK · OIL · SOAP · TAR · WAX — the three in bold are in the grid.

  1. Before the search, any of the three could be the one: each works with exactly three of the five materials.
  2. The grid holds INK, SOAP and WAX. OIL and TAR are nowhere in it.
  3. Ravi does not work with SOAP and Lena does not work with INK, so both are ruled out.
  4. Nora works with all three. The grid, not the story, named her.

The cases in the book use the same idea with bigger grids, more suspects and four more ways for the grid to speak. If you prefer clue-by-clue deduction, the logic grid puzzle guide shows the other classic detective format.

What is in the free pack

The Bonus Case Files is a free 22-page PDF, sized for US Letter paper and printable in black and white. It has:

  • Five new mysteries, one for each method: two beginner, two intermediate and one advanced. They were written for this pack and are not in the book.
  • A story page and a grid page for every case, with a ruled notes column beside each so you can keep track of suspects and words.
  • Full solutions at the back: the marked grid, the evidence it gives and every step of the reasoning.

Questions about the book

Is the book available yet?

Yes. Detective Mystery Word Search is available now as a 170-page, 6 x 9 inch paperback on Amazon. The five free cases are a separate download: you do not need to buy the book to get them.

Do I need to be good at word searches?

No. If you can find a word in a grid, you can play. The detective work starts once the words are found, and each case tells you exactly what to look for in the finished grid.

How are the mysteries made?

Each case was drafted with AI assistance and checked by our puzzle engine: every listed word appears exactly once in its grid, absent words never appear, and each case has exactly one answer that the story alone does not give away. MindGrid Books approved the five free cases for release.

Are solutions included?

Yes. Every case in the book and in the free pack has a solution page at the back with the marked grid and each step of the reasoning.

Is the free pack really free?

Yes. You can download it without buying anything. Signing up also adds you to our list for news about this book and our other puzzle books.

Will I get the pack by email?

Yes. We email the five cases as soon as you sign up, and the download also appears right here on the page, so you do not have to wait for the email. If you ask again later, we can email them once more, at most once every 24 hours.

Fifty cases are waiting

From a three-suspect warm-up to cases where every word in the grid counts. The paperback is available now on Amazon.
